The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant announcement regarding Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun, who has become the first female pilot in the organization, representing a groundbreaking achievement in the field of aviation within the service.
According to a statement from the Customs’ National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, Balogun hails from the Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, although she was born in Kaduna. She began her career in the service in 2002 as a customs assistant.
Maiwada further noted that Balogun previously worked as a cabin crew member in the air wing unit, but her aspirations and resolve enabled her to become a licensed pilot.
Balogun shared her journey of overcoming obstacles, emphasizing her choice of public service over more financially rewarding opportunities in the airline industry.
“It was a tough decision, but my goal was to contribute to public service and fulfil my dream of becoming a pilot,” she said.
Her professional accomplishments encompass the attainment of an advanced diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and the acquisition of her pilot certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, with sponsorship from the NCS.
She highlighted the significance of her success as a source of inspiration for women both within the industry and in broader society.
“Becoming the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing reflects my commitment to advancing both my dreams and the operational capabilities of the NCS,” Balogun remarked, encouraging young Nigerians, particularly women, to pursue their ambitions relentlessly.
